The Gallery: Expressions

February 23, 2011

The Gallery is the brainchild of Tara over at Sticky Fingers (the only blog with Go Faster stripes). Each week Tara sets her blogging disciples a photographic theme for which they must post a suitable picture or pictures. This week the theme is Expressions.

A person’s expression is a powerful tool. It adds nuance to what we are trying to say. It sends a message to the beholder which can be analysed alongside any verbal communication.

It also conveys a message which is locked in a photograph for ever.

Take this picture for example. Two boys. One happy to be photographed, the other looking daggers at the lens.

Once upon a time they both would readily gurn for the camera. Nowadays, the Titian-haired one’s pixels can only be caught on camera by use of tripwires. Tweens, eh?

Be sure to pop over to Tara’s blog by clicking the badge above and check out the other Gallery entries this week!

What lovely looking boys! I remember going through that stage as a teenage where I hated having my photo taken! He will love seeing that when he is older and thinking now why didn’t I look happier? Your other sons cheeky expressions is priceless lol

That is brilliant, it just goes to show how a couple of years difference can make to the attitude of children. Classic photo though.

  3. February 23, 2011 8:12 am

Haha that’s fab! I love the contrast between the two of them – so true what a couple of years difference makes to their expressions of being photographed :)

Hopefully he’ll come full circle and smile again one day. Perhaps in his 30s ;)

Oh the Tween Years! I so don’t look forward to those! I know at some point my daughter will hate me…gah!

    Great snap of polar opposites!

    Those wonderful teenage years!

Haha – what a fab pic! Made me giggle some what. I initially looked at your happy chappy but then clocked that the ‘looks could kill’ expression was just as priceless. Fabby xxx

Now that is a glare! What lovely boys though! Emma

  8. February 23, 2011 10:08 am

    Ha ha, love it x

  9. February 23, 2011 10:15 am

It’s the “Get. The Hell. Away From Me.” stare.

  10. February 23, 2011 10:52 am

Very, very apt! Gorgeous looking boys – happy & daggers!

  11. February 23, 2011 10:59 am

Ha, ha – what a contrast! Mine are the still posing stage tho Monkey does like to pull funny faces and occasionally glowers at the camera but mostly, it’s a gurn.

I suspect I have these joys to come…

  12. February 23, 2011 12:06 pm

That photo has made me laugh. The Titian-haired one’s face speaks a thousand words!

  13. February 23, 2011 12:07 pm

LOL My girls make the same faces. One smiles or makes silly faces. The other always looks bored.

    • February 24, 2011 7:06 pm

Embarrassingly he does it for other people too, not just his parents. Grr…

  14. February 23, 2011 12:25 pm

Wow! Such a difference in expression, although I have to agree with your tween. I am far more comfortable behind a camera then in front of it.

  15. February 23, 2011 1:12 pm

That’s such a murderous look- glad I’m not on the other end of it ;-)

    • February 24, 2011 7:08 pm

It’s a contagious look. Try as we might we couldn’t cajole him, so I ended up being pissed off at his attitude! Argh! :)

  16. February 23, 2011 2:30 pm

My son is exactly the same as yours, except that he doesn’t purposefully frown: he just can’t smile on photographs. It’s almost as if he is allergic to dimples!

  17. February 23, 2011 3:43 pm

I recognise this expression. In fact I may possibly have something similar on my blog atm. Definitely tweenageness.

  18. February 23, 2011 4:04 pm

What a fab photo. I remember being like that through my teens hating my photo being taken fab! xx

    • February 24, 2011 7:11 pm

It will come to the point where I can’t be bothered pointing the camera at him. I know it… Harumph.

  19. February 23, 2011 4:36 pm

He is so unimpressed! Not a teenager yet you say? My eldest is three. How many years until I can expect withering looks at mum? Fab pair of boys xx

    • February 24, 2011 7:12 pm

By my reckoning, about seven or eight years. Don’t say you weren’t warned… :)

    • February 24, 2011 7:14 pm

I find it hard to understand coz I was always happy to smile for the camera! It must skip a generation. :)

  24. February 23, 2011 10:01 pm

Oh dear one is not impressed with having his photo taken! One to keep ahold of for the 18th!

  25. February 23, 2011 10:10 pm

Gorgeous! I’m already going through this with the 3yr old!

  26. February 23, 2011 10:47 pm

Oh dear! At least one of them looks cheerful though! hehe!

    • February 24, 2011 7:16 pm

50% success rate needs improving on though. Perhaps I should try bribery…

  27. February 24, 2011 6:49 pm

Nice shot, what can you expect from teenagers? I am not looking forward to that stage with our Isabelle… @Kahanka

    • February 24, 2011 7:17 pm

Well, he’s not a teen yet. Coupla years to go so it will get worse before it gets better :)

  28. February 24, 2011 9:47 pm

His eyes say it all! It’s funny how their feelings about being photographed will change over the years.
