The Gallery: Expressions
The Gallery is the brainchild of Tara over at Sticky Fingers (the only blog with Go Faster stripes). Each week Tara sets her blogging disciples a photographic theme for which they must post a suitable picture or pictures. This week the theme is Expressions.
A person’s expression is a powerful tool. It adds nuance to what we are trying to say. It sends a message to the beholder which can be analysed alongside any verbal communication.
It also conveys a message which is locked in a photograph for ever.
Take this picture for example. Two boys. One happy to be photographed, the other looking daggers at the lens.
Once upon a time they both would readily gurn for the camera. Nowadays, the Titian-haired one’s pixels can only be caught on camera by use of tripwires. Tweens, eh?

What lovely looking boys! I remember going through that stage as a teenage where I hated having my photo taken! He will love seeing that when he is older and thinking now why didn’t I look happier? Your other sons cheeky expressions is priceless lol
It sums up their different personalities pretty well
That is brilliant, it just goes to show how a couple of years difference can make to the attitude of children. Classic photo though.
It sure does. He didn’t used to be so reluctant to be snapped!
Haha that’s fab! I love the contrast between the two of them – so true what a couple of years difference makes to their expressions of being photographed
Hopefully he’ll come full circle and smile again one day. Perhaps in his 30s
Oh the Tween Years! I so don’t look forward to those! I know at some point my daughter will hate me…gah!
Great snap of polar opposites!
Karin
Those wonderful teenage years!
Still to happen. He’s eleven!
Haha – what a fab pic! Made me giggle some what. I initially looked at your happy chappy but then clocked that the ‘looks could kill’ expression was just as priceless. Fabby xxx
LOL, thanks
Now that is a glare! What lovely boys though! Emma
Aw, thanks. Helps not to know them…
Ha ha, love it x
Thank you, ma’am
It’s the “Get. The Hell. Away From Me.” stare.
Yup! Face like a slapped arse, I call it
Very, very apt! Gorgeous looking boys – happy & daggers!
Chalk and cheese they are. This pic pretty much nails that.
Ha, ha – what a contrast! Mine are the still posing stage tho Monkey does like to pull funny faces and occasionally glowers at the camera but mostly, it’s a gurn.
I suspect I have these joys to come…
I’m assuming it’s a boy thing but you never know…
That photo has made me laugh. The Titian-haired one’s face speaks a thousand words!
It does! “Sod off,” repeated 500 times…
LOL My girls make the same faces. One smiles or makes silly faces. The other always looks bored.
Embarrassingly he does it for other people too, not just his parents. Grr…
Wow! Such a difference in expression, although I have to agree with your tween. I am far more comfortable behind a camera then in front of it.
In that case I’d love to see a photo of the pair of you!
That’s such a murderous look- glad I’m not on the other end of it
It’s a contagious look. Try as we might we couldn’t cajole him, so I ended up being pissed off at his attitude! Argh!
My son is exactly the same as yours, except that he doesn’t purposefully frown: he just can’t smile on photographs. It’s almost as if he is allergic to dimples!
Allergic to dimples! What a terrible affliction…
I recognise this expression. In fact I may possibly have something similar on my blog atm. Definitely tweenageness.
There’s some comfort in knowing I’m not alone
What a fab photo. I remember being like that through my teens hating my photo being taken fab! xx
It will come to the point where I can’t be bothered pointing the camera at him. I know it… Harumph.
He is so unimpressed! Not a teenager yet you say? My eldest is three. How many years until I can expect withering looks at mum? Fab pair of boys xx
By my reckoning, about seven or eight years. Don’t say you weren’t warned…
Chalk and cheese siblings you gotta love them xxx
It’s easy to see who the cheesey one is! Hehe.
Lovely shot! They will probably think that’s sounds a bit girlie and un-cool!
No doubt! I agree with you though
Ooft, if looks could kill! Great photo.
Thank you
ha! pretty much every photo my mum has taken of me from the age of 12 I have my tongue sticking out or am looking very cross. you’ve got to love kids
I find it hard to understand coz I was always happy to smile for the camera! It must skip a generation.
Oh dear one is not impressed with having his photo taken! One to keep ahold of for the 18th!
Deffo! That will give him something to frown at LOL
Gorgeous! I’m already going through this with the 3yr old!
Early onset? Eek you have my sympathy!
Oh dear! At least one of them looks cheerful though! hehe!
50% success rate needs improving on though. Perhaps I should try bribery…
Nice shot, what can you expect from teenagers? I am not looking forward to that stage with our Isabelle… @Kahanka
Well, he’s not a teen yet. Coupla years to go so it will get worse before it gets better
His eyes say it all! It’s funny how their feelings about being photographed will change over the years.
hehe they hit a certain age and thhen they are just too cool to smile for the camera! Bless him!
