To sin by silence…

March 13, 2012

We pray that we will be spared. Today it was Karm el-Zeytoun. Tomorrow it could be our families with their throats cut.

I read a headline about Syria, but I turned the page.

Why were our children butchered by one American soldier? We did not deserve this. There is no Taliban here. No enemies of the allies. Why us?

I heard a radio report about Afghanistan, but I turned it down.

“To sin by silence, when we should protest, makes cowards out of men.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

I saw the news on the television.

But I turned it off.

Too true to the reality of today. Powerful post.

An excellent piece mate, especially what with the way people like things or make it as their status and then think they’re helping fix the problem.

So true – as if adding my angry or heartfelt words to a situation I half understand (possibly) could change anything.

  3. March 13, 2012 3:53 am

Wow, profound take on the prompt!

  4. March 13, 2012 6:50 am

Very timely and poignant, what a dreadful event

  5. March 13, 2012 7:12 am

Truth written bare in 100 words. Very, very powerful.

Mostly we are in the lucky position to be able to switch it off. But sometimes we can’t. There are times when the news comes to us. (I’m writing from Israel so I feel this especially). I know the feeling – from both sides.

Clever, timely and unpleasantly true. Wish I’d thought of it!

  8. March 13, 2012 12:01 pm

Very clever and powerful. We cannot comprehend, we don’t want to understand, so we switch off. Brilliant.

  9. March 13, 2012 2:25 pm

    Perceptive and hard hitting.

  10. March 13, 2012 4:16 pm

What a brilliant piece! Could say more but others have said so before me. Be hard pressed to find a more poignant 100 words this week.

  11. March 13, 2012 7:10 pm

    Brilliantly put. And very powerful.

  12. March 13, 2012 8:17 pm

What an excellent commentary on recent events. Heartbreaking words. Truth can be hard to hear, and bear.

  13. March 13, 2012 9:33 pm

    Agreed. Powerful and humbling

  14. March 13, 2012 10:57 pm

WOW!! Really all I can say and it says it all. I even said it out loud!

  15. March 14, 2012 7:06 am

A real thought provoker. Thank you.

Great use of the prompt and avert powerful piece of writing.
    Well done.

Meant to say …. a very powerful piece of writing, not sure where ‘avert’ came from!

  17. March 18, 2012 1:51 pm

Topical and to the point. Nice work.

Very powerful writing that does make me stop and think of my actions in these times. I shall miss you during your silence but I hope it provides some more great writing!

Very powerful writing, I confess to being occasionally guilty of all of the mentioned :(
